When he learns that another man is after his wife, he solicits a local witch doctor to teach him how to handle poisonous snakes. In this way he hopes to frighten the man away from his loved one. One of several Mitford novels set in this period, just after the Bambatha Rebellion of 1906, the last armed resistance to colonial domination in Zululand.
