Original grey cloth on boards. Hinges cracked. No writing. The first volume, complete in itself, of a very popular 3-volume set. "Beat to Quarters" is a traditional command which requires sailors to drop whatever they are doing and report to their assigned stations, whether for battle or other emergency. The original title, The Happy Return, tells of Captain Hornblower's mission to Nicaragua in 1808 to supply a local landowner with muskets and powder to fight the Spanish, who are aligned with Napoleon. A few twists and turns later, Hornblower meets a love interest. And that's another story. 324 pp.

Original red cloth on boards. Library discard with card pocket. A meek bank clerk attempts to borrow money from his wealthy nephew, who refuses. The clerk poisons him and buries him in the garden. Using the money the nephew had on his person, the clerk invests wisely and becomes wealthy himself. After he deserts his wife, she cooks up a scheme by which he will kill her as if by accident, but leaving evidence which will convict him of murder. 206 pp.

Original grey cloth on boards. Previous owner's stamp twice, scribbled through once. Interior clean. The second part of a trilogy set in the Napoleonic era. Hornblower has just returned from sinking the Spanish ship, Natividad, and is about to receive command of his first ship of the line, HMS Sutherland. He has to work with Admiral Leighton, who is married to Hornblower's girlfriend from the first book, Beat to Quarters. 323 pp.
