Original black cloth on boards. Consideration of boys working in coal mines of Nova Scotia and Vancouver Island between 1866 and 1914, with special mention of Chinese workers and elderly men. It was considered advantageous for families to have as many boys as possible. Drinking and prostitution were popular, and "pit boys" were often involved. The Springhill explosion of February 21, 1891, in which 21 boys under eighteen were killed, produced no calls for change. 305 pp. No marks or damage.
