London Edward Arnold Hard Cover Good Plus to Very Good No Jacket Cecil Aldin
Original red cloth on boards. Previous owner's name in each volume. Volume I very good. Volume II has 3-inch tear to rear (lower) spine joint and across to front joint, which I have glued. Robert Smith Surtees was a popular chronicler of human nature, usually in a sporting scene. He is compared closely with Dickens, especially Pickwick Papers. The artist, Cecil Aldin, is known worldwide as an illustrator of dogs, while his horses bear lively resemblance to the real things. These two volumes contain 24 colour plates and dozens of black-and-white drawings in the text. The reader is invited to join Mr. Jorrocks as he goes bouncing after the hounds, but remember, "A fall's a hawful thing !" Volume I has 363 pp., while Volume II has 372. Heavy books will need extra postage.
