The Story of Noni Chatterji; A Tale of Zenana Life in Simla
4 The Story of Noni Chatterji; A Tale of Zenana Life in Simla
London Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge Hard Cover Good No Jacket 12mo - over 6" - 7" tall C.G. ?
Original red cloth on boards. Spine faded. "St. Mary's Sunday School, August, 1905" in ink on first free endpaper. A puzzling book. Noni is a lower-caste, illiterate woman in Northern India who meets Clare, a young British missionary. Clare teaches Noni to read. Noni marries, and eventually has a little girl (with no reference as to how or when she might have become pregnant). Noni is disappointed because she had wanted a boy, who by tradition would look after his father for the rest of his life. Noni's husband, or Babu, typically cares only for himself, and treats Noni more as a servant than a wife. Written in stilted English of the 19th Century, the book seems to support the British tradition of colonial expansion as though it were a gift to the subject people. Noni becomes a Christian and helper to Clare. 127 pp.
