Original green cloth with gilt decoration on bevelled boards. No DJ. Grecian urn in gilt on front, blind-stamped on back. Lightly bowed. A beautiful little book with a very interesting provenance! Previous owner's name, F.G. Fessenden, New York, Nov. 12th/65(sic). Presentation bookplate from Mrs. J.D. Fessenden, 1895, to Poland Spring Library. Partially superimposed is a bookplate of Poland Spring Library, Main State Building, South Poland, Maine, issued by Hiram Ricker and Sons, Inc. How many people in Poland Spring know that this building was an exhibit at the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago, was dismantled and moved during 1894-95 to Poland Spring, where it became the library.? This llittle book must have been one of the early donations by wealthy clientele of the spa from their private libraries. Here, Swinburne has dressed a Greek tragedy in English clothing, but with a modern spirit of defiance of the old acceptance of fate and divine intervention. Famous hymn to Artemis, afire with the new-born passion of Spring. Dedicated to the memory of Walter Savage Landor. 113 pp. Top edges gilt.
