Original maroon cloth, elaborately blind-stamped, on boards. No DJ. By the author of "The Chronicles of the Schonberg Cotta Family," known to be Elizabeth Charles, an English author some of whose poems were favourably received by Tennyson. This book is in three parts, and as the preface points out, the three parts vary in their faithfulness to historical fact. The Cripple of Antioch "contains little local or historical colouring." In the second, "with the exception of 'The False Christ', only one historical person - Bishop Judas of Jerusalem - is introduced...." In the third, "The Days of Chrysostom," all the principal historical characters speak only what they have written or are reported to have spoken...." Following this admission of much hearsay evidence, the author offers this disclaimer, "The most perfect of our Church histories can be but imperfect copies of imperfect portraits...." - Preface. This book is in clean, sound condition apart from fading of spine lettering and top gutter strain resulting in a 2-inch tear to top of front free endpaper. Minor corner bumps and wear, but no abuse or serious faults. 426 pp. plus many ads.
