The organization was instituted in New York City in 1842 to give discipline, permanency, and united effort to the temperance movement. Edgar Allan Poe was only one of its many prominent subscribers. When Susan B. Anthony was denied the right to speak at one of the society meetings, she formed the Woman's Temperance Society of New York. This small booklet can be posted as letter mail.
