Original orange cloth on boards. A small island in the South Atlantic, a bit closer to Africa than to South America. A Scots soldier claimed it in 1817, and stayed on. Shipwreck-stranded sailors and missionaries came and went. Fifteen male settlers were lost as they rowed out to a supply ship in 1885. At the time of the author's first arrival in 1942, there were about 200 persons living on the island. 196 pp.
