The 71 imaginary conversations in these books originally appeared in Blackwood's Magazine from 1822 to 1835. These witty exchanges must have been very popular! Some are in the form of poems, and Scottish dialect features heavily. The earlier ones had several different authors, including John Gibson Lockhart, William Maginn, James Hogg. Professor John Wilson is given credit for having written all or most of 39 of the dialogues, which usually took place in Ambrose's Tavern in Edinburgh. Green pebbled cloth with gilt lettering on the spines. Most volumes have minor wear at top and bottom of spines, with Volume 1 having the most wear (see photo). There is a dampstain on the bottom 1 1/2" of the covers of Volume 3, but the pages are not affected. All hinges are solid. These books are heavy - expect a request for extra shipping to cover postage and insurance. Volume 1 - 486 pp., Volume 2 - 432 pp., Volume 3 - 469 pp., Volume 4 - 468 pp., and Volume 5 - 465 pp. These items are on consignment, so discounts do not apply.
