Original red cloth covered spine over attractive mottled brown patterned paper boards. One-inch tear in cloth at edge of lower part of spine. Corners and edges well rubbed. Both hinges cracked. Minor foxing. Newspaper article pasted in on front free endpaper. This is the romantic story of Manon (a poor girl), and her lover, the Chevalier Des Grieux, who forfeits his family fortune to be with her. The novel was controversial when it was first published in 1731, and banned in France. The Abbé Prévost toned down some of the more scandalous details in a version published in 1753. 319 pages.
