Original illustrated blue cloth on boards. Library bookplate and spine numbers, with no other evidence. Endpapers lightly foxed. 120 pp. Howard was born to wealthy parents about 1726 at or near Enfield, where he lived for several years at leisure on his inheritance. Upon travelling to Lisbon to witness a recent earthquake, he was captured and imprisoned by the French. This led to his awareness of "how the other half lived", especially those who had suffered in prisons. Appointed as High Sheriff of Bedfordshire, he made the inspection and improvement of prisons all over Europe a priority.
