Original blue cloth with gold tree on beveled boards. Previous owner's name. Minor shelf wear to corners. Top edges gilt. Twain's tone changes as the trip progresses, especially as they reach the Holy Land. Somewhere near Naples, the title morphs into The New Pilgrim's Progress. Since the book was put together by means of several newspaper columns, it's a bit awkward to follow. This book was trememdously popular at the time. Although I didn't read all of it, I found it interesting as a study of Twain himself in comparison to the image of him which I had gained from other writings. 308 pp.
