Original full brown crushed morocco with gilt border on light boards. Cover lightly sprung. All edges gilt. Bookplate of Walter Overbeck Wade, born about 1838 in India and served in 91st Argyllshire Reg't of Foot in Greece in 1854 and 5th Administrative Battalion, Lancashire Rifle Volunteers in 1874. The text of this book is a selection of passages from Ruskin's work of 1843 on Modern Painters, as chosen by his friend Susan Beever, or Beaver, of Coniston. Nearly invisible in the upper corner of the first free endpaper is the incised stamp of Cedric Chivers, Bookbinder, Union St., Bath, who was in the first year of business. He later developed a method of painting on vellum over leather which resulted in many colourful covers, and was known as the "Vellucent" process. His business thrived for 120 years, being bought by Cromwell. Never have we had a book with such varied and interesting provenance. No writing. Minor shelf wear to foot. 184 pp.
