The daughter of William Shakespeare apparently lacked schooling, for at one point in her adult life she "made her mark" as a substitute for writing her name. Another source claims that she was eventually taught to read by a Quaker friend. At the time of her marriage, her husband was fighting a paternity charge by another woman. In Sunrise, Black gets a lot of content from the Berezowski affair, an attempt to assassinate Tsar Alexander II who was in Paris to atend the World's Fair.
