Columbia; Or the Future of Canada

By: Godwin, George

Price: $15.00 USD

Publisher: London, Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & Co., Ltd.: 1928

Seller ID: 006177

Condition: Good Plus to Very Good

Original brown cloth on boards. Paper labels cover and spine. Godwin is an interesting figure who came from England to Canada, tried farming for four years, and then returned to England just in time to take part in Vimy, following which he was invalided out. Entering the practice of law, he spent the rest of his life between it and writing. This book is full of short, pithy statements pointedly, but briefly substantiated before the next subject is broached. Made me want to dig deeper. Minor joint abrasion and tiny cover spots. No writing or other damage. 95 pp. plus a long catalog. View more info

Black cloth on boards. No writing or damage. I would have changed the title to "The Way it Worked for Me" in light of the apparent fact that much, if not most, of what happens in politics is based upon the merger or collision of personalities, as opposed to the intellectual consideration of issues. At any rate, anyone who lasts 30 years in such an important environment must have something worthwhile to contribute, even though it were by default. 402 pp. View more info

Brown cloth on boards. Edited and with an introduction by David Zimmerly. Reading the first half of this book was a real eye-opener. I thought my life growing up in the country had been difficult, but it now seems as little compared with Mrs. Goudie's experiences. Even my five years in the mountains of B.C. were a picnic in comparison. If you don't mind the sentence structure you can learn a lot from this book. No writing. DJ is torn halfway up one side..163 pp. View more info

"Not a few of those who come forward to advocate the mental equality of the sexes, do so in order to show that woman is entitled to the same political rights and privileges as man; a doctrine which, if brought into practical exercise, would tend to the total disorganization of the family institution, and, even more effectually than the spirit of the age, dissolve the domestic ties, and destroy all that makes woman efficient as a moral helpmate of man."- Pp. 167-168. Original black cloth on boards. Unclipped DJ very good. Apparently the aim of the book is to bring some new names to the fore of the field of social and political theory. I started to read it, but bogged down before completing the first chapter on Thomas Carlyle. I believe the part of the book to which I was exposed could have been improved by careful editing. If I were doing it I would have shortened sentences by doing away with so many strings of dependent clauses. 217 pp. including index. View more info
